Orion Hotels Group was founded in 1999 by Franz Gmeiner whose ambitious entrepreneurial vision is to have a presence in 50 countries. Always striving to be better in every way is the tireless mantra of the Executive Management team who lead the people-focused and team oriented organisation.
CEO Orion Group
Austrian born, Franz Gmeiner, came to South Africa with his family at an early age and grew up in Germiston. He learned business principles from an early age, working weekends and holidays, in the family business. He attained academic colours at both school and university where he did a B.Comm Accounting (Hons) and qualified as one of the top ten students in the Chartered Accountants examination.
His career has been marked by leadership, drive and entrepreneurship. In the accountancy profession he became a partner in Cohen and Gmeiner Accountants which he rapidly led to become one of the largest auditing firms in the country.
Always looking for new opportunities, he founded a property company in 1991. This has grown into the current Orion Real Estate Ltd which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. At the age of 40 and at a career crossroads, he wisely decided to focus on his property portfolio. In 1999 he took over the hotel operations of the then ailing Hotel Devonshire, and from this beginning, thirteen years on, the Orion Hotels Division has a built up an enviable portfolio of 15 hotels.
Gmeiner describes himself as a serial entrepreneur and over the years he been involved in a variety of businesses. In his continuous thinking about business success he came across the concept of “Team-based Organisations”. This has become the core of the Orion organisation and today the whole group is a team-based organization.
Franz Gmeiner has a very ambitious vision of building a world class organization spanning more than 50 countries. He has a passion for the hotel business and sees tremendous growth potential in this sector.
He is a member of several clubs and organisations and holds numerous directorships and trusteeships. He is married to Dr Antoinette Gmeiner who is also the Group HR Director, CEO Orion Business Solutions (OBS) and Group EXCO Chairperson. They have three lovely children. His hobbies and leisure activities include gym, travelling and reading. His purpose is to leave behind a better world for humankind. During his lifetime he wants to give abundantly of his love, knowledge, compassion, passion, energy, and wealth.
Dr. Antoinette Gmeiner

Dr. Antoinette Gmeiner is the CEO of Orion Business Solutions, and also a director of OBS Coach House. She is a Master Executive Coach and has extensive coaching Experience on EXCO and Board level. She has been coaching for more than thirteen years and has established an internal Coaching Programme for the Orion Group, where thirteen teams are being coached on a monthly basis. In her role with her joint director, she closely supervises these team coaching sessions and she coaches a few of the teams herself. Antoinette is also the Director, People Development for the Greater Orion Group, where she is responsible for leading the People Development Strategy and Human Resources. This division manages close to 1,000 Orion colleagues and employees.
Dr. Antoinette Gmeiner and a partner, have a Business Partner relationship with a LPL (Learning Performance Link), as well as the ETDP SETA, where they have established a coaching academy. They present a three day Leader-Manager as Coach programme, as well as an accredited business and life coaching course. They are in the process of investigating a master’s Executive course that will commence in 2013, in partnership with MONASH University. They supervise MBA students’ dissertations at MBS (Monash Business School) and love to do research, especially qualitative research at all levels.
They are also busy writing a book on team coaching, as they specialize in team coaching and have been coaching internal and external teams in organisations for more than 24 years.
